Summary
In March 1932, during the height of the Great Depression, a group of World War I veterans calling themselves the "Bonus Expeditionary Force" set up tents on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to demand prepayment in full of a bonus that was due to be paid to them beginning in 1945. For four months, 20,000 veterans camped on the lawn, eventually prompting President Herbert Hoover to authorize the use of force to remove them. His response to the Bonus Army incident contributed to Hoover's loss at the polls that November
