The sheet music was either owned or collected by the Fifield family, in most cases Emily A. Porter Fifield and her daughter Mary Fifield King.. This series is arranged alphabetically by title of the song or composition. The container list gives the title, composer, lyricist, publisher and place, lithographer, artist of cover illustrations, date, and a description. The sheet music includes popular dance and concert music as well as songs. Of particular interest is the abolitionist, political, and Civil War songs. . The bound volumes include church music as well as volumes of music for children, for adult singing schools or parties, for temperance meetings, and cotillions. One volume is entitled "The Boston Handel and Haydn Society Collection of Church Music"
Biographical or historical data
Emily Anna Porter (1838 -1913), daughter of Thomas Bradstow and Emily Vining Porter, married William Bond Cranch Fifield (1830-1896) , son of Dr. Noah and Hannah Cranch Bond Fifield in 1856. Porter at the age of 15 attended a school run by William Bentley Fowle (1795 -1865) in Boston. Upon her graduation, Porter returned home, married and lived in Dorchester. They are described in a Dorchester Athenaeum biographical sketch as having cultivated refined instincts. They were both fond of music and attended the Symphony and other concerts and oratories in Boston. Dr. Fifield played the violin. Emily Fifield was a long time member of the Boston School Committee, first elected in 1884 and at that time only the second woman, She was known for her philanthropic, religious, and educational work. She served as Recording Secretary of the National Alliance, a national woman's organization of the Unitarian Church and wrote a history of the Alliance completed by her daughter. In 1911 she and her daughter and son-in-law had a house built in Milton named Kingfield. Mary Fifield King (1857-1941) was the only daughter of William Cranch Bond and Emily Anna Porter Fifield. She married Sylvanus F. Freeman in 1875 according to A Genealogy of the Descendant of Richard Porter who Settled in Weymouth , 1635 and allied families by Joseph Whitcomb Porter, 1878 (Bangor: Burr and Robinson, printers) on Google books. Then, sometime before 1911, she married Henry B. King. She completed her mother's history of the National Alliance, prepared historical scrapbooks for the First Church Dorchester and donated Fifield family historical materials to the church and the Boston Medical Library as well as to Tufts Library.
