Summary
Paleoanthropologist Zeresenay "Zeray" Alemseged studies the origins of humanity deep in the Ethiopian desert. Through his Dikika Research Project (DRP) he discovered the earliest known skeleton of a hominid child, the 3.3 million-year-old bones of Selam, a 3-year-old girl of the species Australopithecus afarensis. "We have two choices: One is to continue to see a poor, ill, crying Africa, carrying guns, that depends on other people forever, or to promote an Africa which is confident, peaceful, independent, but cognizant of its huge problems and great values at the same time." Director and Curator of the Anthropology department at the California Academy of Sciences Alemseged discusses how Africa holds the clues to our humanity and about finding the oldest skeleton of a humanoid child in this informative TEDTalk
