Biographical or historical data
Archibald Mitchell, born in Scotland in 1775, came to the United States around the age of fourteen. Family lore is that he ran off to sea and never returned to his native land. He followed the sea for many years, and on September 23, 1804 married Rhode Corthell of West Scituate. They were married in Beverly Massachusetts but later moved to Scituate where they stayed for the rest of their lives.Archibald and Rhoda had at least four children and ten known grandchildren. Many of the family lived in Beverly and Scituate. The early family members were primarily seamen and farmers. Many generations can be found in Scituate town records in various positions serving the needs of the Scituate town's people. Additional records show that among other occupations, they were also surf men, fishermen, shoe makers, hotel owners, traders, post masters, teachers, meat cutters, surveyors, engineers, contractors, carpenters and realtors. Five generations of Mitchell's are buried at the Groveland Cemetery in Scituate. The property on Hollet Street was purchased by Josiah Hunt from Henry Studley in 1871. Josiah left the property to his son Nathan Hunt around 1878. In 1898, Nathan sold the property to Charles Nathan and Archie Loring Mitchell, the children of his sister Ellen M. Hunt Mitchell. On January 28, 1924, the property was conveyed to Martha S. Mitchell by Charles Nathan Mitchell and Archie Loring Mitchell, and stayed in the Mitchell family for several more years.
