Summary
In response to the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, the United States began a naval blockade of the island in October 1962. The blockade - called a quarantine - was aimed at preventing any additional Soviet weapons from reaching the island. After secret negotiations, the Soviet Union announced that it would withdraw its missiles from Cuba in exchange for an American promise not to invade the island
