Summary
President Woodrow Wilson initially opposed voting rights for women, and suffragists demonstrated against him. As World War I continued, Wilson gradually changed his mind, due in part to women's roles in the war effort. In 1918 he urged Congress to pass an amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote. The 19th Amendment was ratified on August 26, 1920
