Summary
The auto industry profited from the assembly line technique of mass production. During the Great Depression automakers strove to increase production to offset the economic crisis, and working conditions declined dramatically. Encouraged by Franklin D. Roosevelt's National Labor Relations Act, which gave unions federal protection, in 1936, the relatively new United Automobile Workers (UAW) called a sit-down strike at the Flint, Michigan General Motors plant. The strike lasted six weeks, effectively shutting down production. In February 1937 GM formally recognized the union and UAW membership soared
