- Inclusive dates
- This collection is composed of a single journal created by Robert and Carol Broker in coordination with their family and friends. The journal focuses on commemorating the individuals who died as result of the United States dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well as emphasizing the importance of refraining from the use of such weapons in the future. After an introductive narrative written by the Brokers, the journal is organized by date, with entries for each week between August 5, 1984 and August 14, 1985. The entries include handwritten notes and other materials focusing on subjects relating to peace, religion, history, and war
- Biographical or historical data
- The year of 1985 was the fortieth anniversary of the end of World War II and the use of the atomic bomb by the United States. Observances were held around the world to remember the civilians who died during and after the bombings. In Hingham, Massachusetts Robert and Carol Broker decided to honor those who had died by observing a year of remembrance. In order to do this, they bought a small journal as well as a large red candle. They asked family and friends in Hingham to each pick a week between August 5, 1984 and August 9, 1985 during which they would light the candle in one of their windows as well as write an entry in the journal. Multiple individuals/families participated in the project, which resulted in a journal filled with images, newspaper clippings, poems, letters, and notes related to such issues as the Cold War, peace, and general violence.
